Cheryl Morgan Young

Cheryl Morgan Young is blessed of God to be one of his servants in the Ministry of Music. She strives to share God’s gift of music and to encourage others to expand their talents in the ministry of music.

She is the only daughter of Doctors Joseph and Evelyn Morgan and was practically born a musician. The Lord blessed her to play piano at home at the age of three and one-half years old and then later began playing in Jerusalem M. B. Church as the Sunday School musician at ten years old. As a teenager, she expanded her responsibilities to the Youth and Young Adult Concert Choir and the Cantata Choir as one of the musicians. Her responsibilities expanded as one of the musicians for the Sanctuary Choir and the Mass Choir at Jerusalem M. B. Church.

As a child being reared in a minister’s and a musician’s home, she worked with many musicians and was constantly exposed to the field of music through her mother’s connections and efforts. She grew up in the Morgan’s Studio of Musicianship and later began teaching in the studio until high school graduation. She was always active in all music activities from grade school through college and beyond.

Among her early music activities, she was the organist for the State Congress of Missouri for eight years serving alongside her mother who was Music Director and Pianist. She was the guitarist for chapel at Bethel Lutheran School and the pianist for the Girls Glee Club at Lutheran North High School. She also served as pianist for the State Youth Fellowship and later as the organist for the State Congress. Cheryl worked along with her mother in the Antioch District Music Department for many years and later when she passed, she became the Antioch District Director of Music to which she was overseer and coordinator for the Pre-Congress Musicals and Youth Rally for five years. Under Moderator Duane Sleet’s administration, she returned to the position of Antioch District Youth Director and Youth Rally Coordinator. We grew from 30 to over 300 youth. The Lord blessed us to present the largest ever Youth Rally in the history of Antioch District. She sang with the University of Missouri – St. Louis, University Chorus and traveled with them twice all over Europe in a singing tour performing Mozart’s Requiem Mass in England, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, Luxemburg, Italy and many more.

She participated in the National Congress Musicals when it was here in early 1980’s and sang with the Legend Singers in the early 1990’s. She has participated in several Winter Music Readings with the University of Missouri – Kansas City in association with the Wingert-Jones Music Store. She also worked with Dr. Doris Wilson and Rev. Jack McGill to further her understanding of the Ministry of Music in the Black Baptist Churches. She assisted Sis. Shirley Hairston in her solo concerts and with Rev. Willie Kilpatrick with a gospel concert both held at the Hopewell M. B. Church. She was Minister of Music for the Jerusalem M. B. Church for over 21 years for multiple choirs and choruses.

The Lord inspired her to continue the Music Workshops originally established by her mother, Dr. Evelyn H. Morgan. We did workshops annually that ultimately evolved into a city-wide workshop worship experience. Christians from multiple denominations come together to study and to praise the Lord, Our God. Truly we enjoy the presence of the Holy Spirit at each workshop more each year. Thank You Holy Spirit!

Cheryl holds a B. A. in Mathematics with minors in Philosophy, Statistics and Computer Science. She also holds a Master’s in Information Management with major emphasis in Artificial Intelligence in Manufacturing minoring in Linguistics and Natural Language Processing. She is a certified Knowledge Engineer and has several technical certifications (multiple operating systems maintenance, databases and security administration) and extensive training in the field of Computer Science and Large Systems Implementation. She traveled for nearly twelve years in consulting and nine of those years implementing SAP for large commercial and government clients across the U.S., Canada and in Korea. Cheryl is currently on sabbatical from her work with the Northwestern Theological Seminary pursuing a Doctorate in Theology (Th.D.) and is scheduled to resume soon.

Cheryl is very active in and outside the music world. Nineteen years ago, she and her husband, Clifford Young, founded HRMS Properties and HRMS Ventures – a real estate investment and property management company and a real estate education corporation. The company is biblically based and its origin come from the 23rd division of Psalm, verse 3b – “He Restoreth My Soul.”

We appeared in the television infomercial with Carleton Sheets and she wrote internet articles for the organization founded by Robert T. Kiyosaki. We mentored real estate investors students in St. Louis, Missouri and actively spoke at the Florissant Valley Community College and other public engagements spreading God’s goodness and encouraging others in the real estate arena.

She frequently worked together with the New Life Evangelistic Center on various projects, ranging from Saturday Night Music events to telethons to private phone support to raise money, clothes and food for the homeless shelter.

She served customers with both Residential and Commercial Financing all over the U.S. (residential and commercial) and in some overseas countries. She has worked with Single and Multi-Tenant Developers, Apartment Owners, Gas Stations and Convenience Store, Portfolios of Commercial Properties and a host of institutional lenders and banks. She worked with Duranté Parks to develop the Home Study Course for Commercial Financing and the online version of the 8-Week Financing Boot Camp. She remains a mentor and a loan consultant in the commercial financing arena.

Cheryl and her husband, Clifford Young, together with another partner are managers and administrators for Friends of AGAPE, Inc., a non-profit Adult Day Health Care Center. We are a part of the CACFP federal grant program to assist with food service for adult day cares. We owned and sold multiple companies: AGAPE Consumer Directed Services, Shepherds Care Services and Redemption Consumer Directed Services (Kansas City) - all were in-home health care businesses. She was board member of the Missouri Association of Adult Day Services for 10 years and 5 of them were serving as President.  During this pandemic, a true test of agility and flexibility was exercised as we advocated for Adult Senior and Disability Services together all the Local and State regulatory agencies to which we report. A lot took place during those meetings that gave providers great opportunity to serve and participants more protective services to aid them during this crisis. We are ecstatic to be able to serve on a broader scale and pray the Lord will continue to provide strength and guidance for the steps that are ahead. We loved what we did and God has blessed us tremendously.

For nine years, ending in 2018, she served together with Minister Charlotte Brown and Evangelist Janice Moorehead in the Youth Gospel Music Conference of St. Louis and Kansas City teaching songs and facilitating the Adult Workshop bridging the gap between Youth and Adults.  The first time ever, both workshop choirs sang a song, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and arranged by both Cheryl and Charlotte entitled “Rejoice!” and it is solely based on Philippians 4:4-8 and Philippians 2:1-2 KJV. God is so awesome!  Within the last few years, the Lord has been speaking with Cheryl through scripture and song, resulting in the copywriting of several songs as “Jesus Is His Name”, “God Knows What’s Best”, “Rejoice!”, “With All That I Am”, “Upon This Rock”, “He Did It For Me”, “Jesus Is Coming Back”, “He’s the Light”, “Jesus Is Lord” and many more. "Jesus is Lord!" was sang by the National Edwin Hawkins Music & Arts Seminar Choir in 2015. The piece “Upon This Rock” is included in the GIA Publication of the Ecumenical Hymnal “One Lord, One Faith and One Baptism.” Such an honor!

She sang with Dr. Erral Wayne Evans and The St. Louis Progressive Mass Choir and For Your Soul!, a gospel ensemble in Germany. These groups were the first to EVER perform any of the music given to her by the Holy Spirit. The St. Louis Progressive Mass Choir was featured in a singing tour in September 2011 and one of her songs, “Jesus Is His Name,” was sung all over Central and Northern Germany. She served as the US liaison for For Your Soul!, which allowed her to work more closely with them in the recording of their debut CD, here in St. Louis, where they recorded two of her songs, “He Did It For Me” and “God Knows What’s Best.” She worked with FYS! and Dr. Evans to coordinate a gospel music workshop held in Lubeck, Germany, August 23-26, 2012. She served in Excitement 2012-2015 as an instructor and board member. Cheryl worked with Dr. Evans and Rusty Watson, National Coordinator Emeritus of the Edwin Hawkins Music & Arts Seminar, in the coordination of Choir Week in St. Louis and serves on the board for the St. Louis Progressive Mass Choir and Excitement – Germany.

In 2014, Cheryl moved on from being Minister of Music at Jerusalem M. B. Church to the role of Chapter Leader and Founder for the Edwin Hawkins and Bishop Walter Hawkins Music and Arts Love Fellowship Conference.  In 2016, three separate musical submissions were accepted and presented at three (3) National Music Conferences/Conventions (Hymn Lovers Conference, Hawkins Music & Arts Love Fellowship Conference and The National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses). In 2015-2016, WESL Praizze, she hosted a popular radio talk show, presenting Let’s Talk with Cheryl Morgan Young. The show aired for two years. From that show, many ideas were birthed as well as a blog which is still active today. Cheryl was an active member of the Missouri Gospel Announcers Guild for 8+ years, working in the background.

Cheryl served as dean of the Hymn Lovers Conference for 3 years. During her tenure, the conference participants wrote and copyrighted a Protest Hymn “How Much More” and can be purchased today on the Hymn Lover’s Conference site. She taught piano and voice at the Bridgeton Music & Arts Center, subsidiary of the National Chain, Guitar Center.  She also taught private piano student students and four other ESL, ELA, reading and math students through Varsity Tutors, all online.  Now she only teaches private music lessons online. With the season of graduations also comes the season of online recitals. She has four graduating students this Spring and the recitals are coming soon. As per usual, she is very active in the community music and religious sectors and has been blessed with a broad reach. You will frequently see her online LIVE via FB recording musical history from the various services she attends. God has truly sustained her for this journey.

During the pandemic, she was honored to teach “Technology in the Music Ministry” with many other great musicians across the country in an online conference hosted by Dr. Ouida Harding. The work with her continues to this day and we are expanding the educational offerings.

Cheryl’s husband went home to be with the Lord in June 2022 and leaves a devastating hole in her heart and the Lord is faithful, carrying her through to new levels in Him. The reach is widening and for this, we give honor and praise to the Almighty God. As they were known as Cliff and Cheryl, she is now working to reinvent herself as Cheryl and continues the work that begun with her and her husband, as well as her mother and father. She plans to work while it is “day” in her life.

Among many other tasks, she currently serves as the Minister of Music at the Hopewell M. B. Church, since February 2019. It is an honor to work in the music ministry supporting Dr. Donald Ray McNeal, Pastor.

Cheryl is a ‘perfectionist’ by default, an SAP Technical Systems Consultant and Information Technologist by trade, a real estate investor/agent and commercial financier by profession, a consultant and event planner, a teacher and mentor, a musician and writer all gifts from God and a Christian Disciple, called to serve by Jesus Christ our Lord.

“Jesus is Lord!”

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

- Philippians 2:9-11 (KJV)
